TMJ Injections

What are tmj injections?

Steroid injections can be used to reduce TMJ pain and improve jaw movement and function. The steroid, often referred to as cortisone, is the same substance commonly used to treat other joints such as knees and hips. Typically, these injections are coupled with local anesthetic to ensure you experience a comfortable and pain-free treatment.

When should i consider a tmj injection?

Often times, steroid injection treatment will be considered when patients haven't responded to alternative treatments such as occlusal splints, or other facial pain management strategies. Injections can be a quick, low-cost alternative to minimally-invasive TMJ surgery.

Benefits of TMJ steroid injections:

Cortisone injections relieve jaw tension and allow 'locked' muscles to engage in fluid movement. TMJ injection treatment can also help reduce clenching, grinding, and associated headaches. The treatment is less invasive and much more cost-effective than traditional TMJ surgery, and can be completed in ten minutes to thirty minutes, depending on the number of injections required.

what to expect during the tMJ injection procedure:

Your oral and maxillofacial surgeon will work with you to perform a full head and neck examination, followed by a more in-depth TMJ exam. If you are determined to be a good candidate for TMJ steroid injection treatment, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon will administer one or more injections on-site.

Many patients experience a small sting when the procedure is administered, followed by a bit of soreness or tenderness. This sensation tends to ware off immediately, but can be aided with an ice pack or cold compress. In very rare cases, you may experience some headaches, bruising, or nausea. If you do experience these symptoms, be sure to contact your oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Within four to seven days, your jaw muscles should feel noticeably less tense, and symptoms associated with TMJ pain should start to subside. For some patients, it may take just over a week for symptoms to improve.

Finally, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon will work with you to determine a schedule for any repeat treatments, if necessary.
